Full of highs and lows, 2023 has been a bumpy ride for councils, with funding cuts to major infrastructure projects, a cancelled Commonwealth Games, and devastating natural disasters.

Amongst these hard times councils have persisted, making strides to improve liveability for communities by delivering essential services, upgrades and key initiatives.

Here are the top stories from Council this year:

1. VIC Gov introduces new glass recycling bins

The Victorian Government is rolling out new bins across the state for recycling glass, with many councils taking up the new initiative.

2. Federal Gov to deliver $40M road package for NSW Council

Shoalhaven City Council has endorsed the Federal Government’s plan to deliver a $40 million road improvement package to the region.

3. VIC Gov cancels plans to host Commonwealth Games

Victorian Premier, Daniel Andrews, has announced that Victoria will not be hosting the 2026 Commonwealth Games due to costs expanding far beyond the original estimated $2.6 billion budget for the 12-day sporting event.

4. Council wins prestigious NSW Awards

A New South Wales Council has been recognised for its innovative projects in disaster recovery and environmental protection, winning two awards at the 2023 Local Government Professionals NSW Awards.

5. E-scooter trial first for NSW

Wollongong has become the first city in New South Wales to allow e-scooters to be used in the city centre, as part of a 12-month trial with Neuron.
