Glenorchy exploring options for War Memorial Pool

MI Global Partners have been appointed by Glenorchy City Council to explore options for the development of the Glenorchy War Memorial Pool site.

Glenorchy Mayor, Bec Thomas, said that MI Global Partners has more than 20 years’ experience working on events, sport and other projects, and has associations with firms both nationally and locally to undertake various aspects of this project.

“MI Global Partners was selected following a strongly contested tender process and has demonstrated the necessary credentials and experience to examine our options for the pool site, provide Council with the appropriate advice, and lead community engagement to ensure residents and ratepayers of Glenorchy get their say on this important issue,” Mayor Thomas said.

Mayor Thomas said more information about engagement opportunities would be available in January, with the community to be kept informed as to how it can be part of the conversation about the future of the pool site, with a final report on options expected to be provided to Council by July 2024.

The council was forced to keep the pool closed this summer after an independent report into the facility found it presented a number of immediate public safety risks.

The pool, built in the 1960s, has reached the end of its operational life having served the community for 20 years longer than expected at the time it was constructed.

The pool facility has deteriorated and, in addition to the safety issues, does not comply with a number of legislative requirements including disability access and privacy standards.

Mayor Thomas said that Council looks forward to receiving MI Global Partners’ report and understanding what options the community supported.

“Importantly, the report will also form the basis for Council to seek funding from other tiers of government once a preferred option is determined.”
