The Federal Government is investing $105 million in critical infrastructure projects in Western Australia, which are expected to unlock up to 28,000 homes.
Coming as part of the government’s Housing Support Program, the funding has been allocated to 21 projects to fast-track housing in regional and metropolitan growth areas.
The projects are delivering social housing as well as enabling infrastructure – such as power, water and sewer works – critical for increasing housing supply.
The funding allocation includes:
- $50.6 million for Water Corporation infrastructure projects that will deliver an estimated 23,280 residential lots, including $7.3 million for two regional projects to deliver over 3,000 lots in Bunbury and Dardanup
- $30.5 million for projects delivered by Western Power, DevelopmentWA and the Department of Planning, Lands and Heritage that will deliver an estimated 4,565 residential lots and 19 social housing dwellings
- $23.8 million for construction projects that will deliver 51 social housing dwellings in High Wycombe, Stirling and Innaloo
The Federal Government is working closely with the Western Australian Government to identify opportunities to fast-track housing development across the state.
Federal Minister for Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government, Catherine King, said that every Australian deserves the opportunity to have the keys to their own home.
“We’re pulling every lever to fix this problem – streamlining planning policies, incentivising our construction workforce, and implementing ambitious policies to get more Australians into more homes more quickly,” Minister King said.
“We’re unlocking thousands more homes by building the infrastructure South Australians need.”
Federal Member for Pearce, Tracey Roberts, said, “To make housing more affordable, we know we’ve got to build, build, build, and that’s what these projects are about.”
Western Australian Treasurer, Rita Saffioti, said that significant investment in enabling infrastructure is absolutely critical to boosting the supply of both development ready land and new housing.
“We will continue to leverage all opportunities to partner with the Federal Government to deliver more homes for Western Australians,” Treasurer Saffioti said.
“This investment is just one in a long list of measures being delivered to boost housing supply, which we know is key to keeping housing affordable.”
Western Australian Minister for Planning and Housing, John Carey, said that the State Government continues to work in lockstep with the Federal Government to boost housing across the continuum throughout Western Australia.
“This major $105 million commitment from the Federal Government will unlock key infrastructure works to support a pipeline of new housing construction across the state and further boost social housing delivery.
“Just last week, our government announced a further $443 million commitment to boost affordable rental housing in Western Australia in partnership with the Federal Government, bringing the State Government’s investment in housing and homelessness measures to a record $3.6 billion since 2021-22.”
