Western Australian Government has announced that it will be increasing funding for local councils to support the rollout of the Food Organics Garden Organics program (FOGO).
From 1 July 2023, the $20 million Better Bins Plus: Go FOGO program will be open year-round.
The State Government has strengthened its commitment to local governments by increasing the rates available from next month to $10, $15 or $25 per household. This will help councils transitioning to or improve the three-bin service until the funding program concludes in 2026.
The State Government has a target for all local governments in the Perth and Peel regions to adopt FOGO by 2025. The service is being used by 17 Western Australian councils and a further 12 have committed to making the transition.
Some local governments have achieved material recovery rates as high as 65 per cent.
Western Australia Environment Minister, Reece Whitby, said that these changes will give councils an even greater incentive to roll out FOGO, making it easier for local governments to plan, apply for and secure a grant.
“It’s encouraging to see so many local governments embrace the three-bin service, with some achieving recovery rates as high as 65 per cent,” Mr Whitby said.
“We need more local governments to come onboard to help us reach our 2025 target. A simple change can have a significant impact on the environment.”
