The City of Rockingham has won two prestigious awards at the Institute of Public Works Engineering Australasia Excellence Awards, held on 10 March 2023.
The City won Best Public Works Project Under $2 Million category for construction of its Mersey Point Granite Seawall in Shoalwater, and the Excellence in Road Safety Projects for its upgrade of Safety Bay Road between Kwinana Freeway and Mandurah Road.
The Mersey Point Granite Seawall project involved the demolition of the old limestone seawall, which was replaced with a new granite seawall.
Work was carried out to protect a vulnerable part of the City’s coastline, with the project informed by the City’s Coastal Hazard Risk Management Adaptation Plan.
Upgrades to Safety Bay Road were delivered in stages by maximising Blackspot funding, and this project involved a strategic review of all intersections between Kwinana Freeway and Mandurah Road.
Various upgrades along the route were made including installing additional lanes, pre-deflections at roundabouts, and enhanced traffic lights.
City of Rockingham Mayor, Deb Hamblin, said, ”Planning for future generations is a key aspiration in the City’s Strategic Community Plan, and these awards are welcome recognition for two significant engineering projects that the City has delivered for the community.
“All categories at the Excellence Awards were highly competitive, and the City thanks IPWEA WA for acknowledging the City’s outstanding efforts in this field.”
The City was also nominated as a finalist for the Excellence in Road Safety Projects category for its review of right turn filters at traffic signals on local roads, as well as the Excellence in Asset Management and Excellence in Innovation (Metro) category for developing its Coastal Facilities Strategy.
