The future of council service delivery is powered by data, AI, and trust. Following a highly successful innovation summit that brought together 14 NSW Local Councils, key challenges facing the sector were identified and strategic solutions were unveiled, charting a clear course for digital evolution.
Unveiling critical challenges
Nine years of partnership with Australian councils has revealed systemic challenges hindering service delivery and staff productivity. These headwinds are demanding strategic, technological intervention:
- Rising citizen expectations: A staggering 75 per cent of people now expect government services to match the quality and responsiveness of the private sector.
- The AI proficiency gap: A 33 per cent disparity in tech adoption threatens equitable access to services for diverse community members.
- Budget and resource pressures: Councils are grappling with significant cost-shifting and substantial resource constraints, with 41 per cent of staff time lost to low-value, repetitive tasks.
The takeaway is unambiguous: moving beyond fragmented legacy systems to a comprehensive AI-powered government platform is no longer optional but essential for operational sustainability and community confidence.
The core of the summit explored the practical steps councils must take to transform into proactive community partners – a shift from being reactive service providers. Local government is uniquely caught between state mandates (like DA approvals) and community demands for easy, 24/7 service. Resolving this tension requires focus on three strategic pillars:
- Automate Processes: This involves moving beyond basic CRM functions within ERP systems to offer efficient, concierge-like service to citizens, freeing up staff for complex tasks.
- Access to the right data at the right time: Empowering employees by eliminating time wasted “swivel-chairing” between siloed systems, which dramatically cuts response times and increases confidence.
- Personalise communication: Turning routine administration into meaningful, trust-building experiences through proactive, tailored updates.
Integration: The non-negotiable foundation
Integration emerged as the non-negotiable foundation for achieving these strategic goals. With 8 out of 10 IT leaders stating that integration challenges slow transformation, the MuleSoft session showcased how a unified platform builds the necessary “agent-ready” environment.
This was validated by a striking NSW Council success story: leveraging robust integration, they achieved a 15-minute end-to-end DA processing time—cutting the process by 15 steps. Furthermore, the technology delivered a 30 per cent reduction in integration costs and 78 per cent faster time-to-market, proving that efficiency gains directly tackle resource and cost constraints.
Future technologies: Data cloud and AI
The final strategic sessions looked forward, focusing on how Data Cloud, AI, and Agentforce will drive intelligent engagement. Success hinges on robust integration to unlock the full potential of AI, allowing councils to leverage unified, trusted data for automating complex workflows and elevating service delivery.
Momentum and unity
A robust panel discussion with Maitland City Council and Wollondilly Shire Council, reinforced the need to move decisively from fragmented systems to unified platforms to achieve productivity and staff empowerment.
With the overwhelmingly positive response from attendees and to extend these valuable insights to the broader council community, Salesforce is hosting a follow-up webinar in December. This is a crucial opportunity to dive deeper into the strategies discussed, particularly how to leverage unified platforms for better service delivery and staff empowerment. Don’t miss the chance to join this session and continue building momentum towards a digitally transformed council environment.
