With councils across the Northern Territory recruiting trainees and apprentices for a new pilot program, the state’s Local Government Association (LGANT) is encouraging Territorians to consider a career in local government.

The Local Government Traineeship Pilot Program, a collaboration between LGANT, GTNT Group, Industry Skills Advisory Council NT and the Northern Territory Government, is designed to place up to 25 Territorians in councils to complete formal qualifications through supported, on-the-job learning.

“The new program was a great opportunity for people to step into meaningful, long-term employment in their local community” said LGANT President, Kon Vatskalis.

“We know local government is often the largest employer in remote and regional areas – and this program is a practical and powerful way to build our workforce, grow local capability and create future council leaders from within our communities,” Vatskalis said.

Darwin’s Ellen Worsfold, 21, is one of the first to successfully apply for a traineeship and she is enjoying on-the-job training in the LGANT head office while completing her Certificate III in Business.

“I wanted a career change from childcare and to do something office based as well as get a different qualification. I’m now working in the Executive Officer role and I have been trusted with looking after a range of work, then I study Thursday mornings with my training provider, Institute of Skills Training Australia,” Worsfold said.

The two-year program offers tailored training focused on administration qualifications to support local government operations. Other training opportunities in a wider range of industries will be considered on a case by case basis. Trainees and apprentices will receive mentoring, peer networking opportunities and exposure to the essential operations of council life.

Participating councils are being encouraged to take on at least one trainee, with the support of GTNT Group, who will offer recruitment support, manage training arrangements and provide mentoring for both trainees and their host councils.

GTNT Group CEO, Kathryn Stenson, said that this is about creating Territory futures.

“We’re proud to support councils and candidates with a structured, supported pathway to help people thrive.”
