Council-owned regional and remote airports impacted by the collapse of Rex Airlines will receive financial relief from the Federal Government, helping regional communities maintain critical aviation connections.
The Federal Government announced funding support for 34 council-run airports left out of pocket after Rex Airlines entered voluntary administration.
Following an application process, 95 per cent of claimants were assessed as eligible, with payments covering 100 per cent of eligible debt.
The Australian Local Government Association (ALGA) said it had worked closely with Federal ministers and affected councils to highlight the financial strain placed on council-owned airports following the airline’s collapse.
ALGA welcomed the announcement, saying the support would help regional and remote communities remain connected.
“It is encouraging to see the Government has listened, delivering targeted support to help regional communities stay connected,” ALGA said.
Regional airports play an important role in supporting passenger travel, freight movement, health services and economic activity across rural and remote Australia, with many facilities operated and maintained by local councils.
