The Rockingham Arts Centre (RAC) will soon receive a $300,000 refurbishment, with the City of Rockingham starting the upgrades in early February.
The centre, located on Kent Street in Rockingham, facilitates activities and events for arts groups in the local community.
The refurbishment will:
- Upgrade gallery lighting
- Install swinging walls for additional gallery space
- Provide additional storage capacity
- Install an arts wash-out amenity in the multipurpose room
- Repaint the interior of the centre
- Install CCTV
- Construct a shade sail in the front courtyard
The facility currently consists of an exhibition space, multi-purpose room and a studio space.
Bookings for the RAC are often full for the various community and art groups seeking to utlilise the facility, so the refurbishment will ultimately provide artists and art groups with more opportunities to activate the space and provide programs and activities to the community.
The refurbishment will upgrade the interior of the RAC to strengthen the flexibility and function of the facility for users, lift the quality of art exhibitions, and improve wayfinding between the RAC and the nearby Gary Holland Community Centre.
City of Rockingham Mayor, Deb Hamblin, said the Rockingham Arts Centre was a key element in the City’s Cultural Development and the Arts Strategy.
“The RAC was opened in 2013 and has become an integral part of the city’s cultural development and arts program. The facility is a hub for arts activity, with a focus on providing skill development workshops, hireable spaces for local arts and culture groups, and the staging of exhibitions,” Mayor Hamblin said.
Works to be carried out at the RAC will aim to improve the activation of the centre, and enable user groups to host more activities, events and exhibitions in an enhanced setting suitable for the arts.
In advance of works commencing, the facility will be closed from Monday 31 January 2022.
Construction is anticipated to be completed by the end of May 2022.
