A suite of updated governance resources has been released to support council staff and elected members in meeting legislative requirements ahead of the 2026 Local Government elections.
The Local Government Association of South Australia (LGASA) has developed the materials to reflect recent legislative amendments and address common governance challenges faced by councils.
The resources are designed to assist members in applying governance obligations in practice, with guidance covering areas such as conflict of interest, caretaker periods, remuneration and election processes.
Recently released materials include guidelines on caretaker policies, conflict of interest, election signage, deputy mayor selection, and remuneration registers, along with resources covering taxation implications and mandatory governance documents.
Additional guidance currently under review includes model policies and procedures for community engagement, complaints handling, fraud and misconduct, council committees and service requests, as well as updated financial statement templates for 2026.
LGASA said the resources aim to strengthen governance capability across the sector and support councils in maintaining compliance and transparency in the lead-up to the elections.
Access to the materials is available through LGASA member portal, with further updates to be released as additional resources are finalised.
