A new pedestrian and cyclist suspension bridge has opened in Casino, restoring a key community connection between the CBD, sporting precincts and riverside parks following the loss of the previous structure in the 2022 floods.
The $3.5 million bridge was jointly funded by the Federal and New South Wales Governments under the Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements, with Richmond Valley Council delivering the project.
Designed to improve resilience during future flood events, the new bridge has been constructed higher above the Richmond River than its predecessor, providing a more reliable year-round connection for pedestrians and cyclists.
The 160-metre structure, including its raised approaches, spans 55 metres between its two towers and reaches 19 metres above the river at its highest point.
The bridge will form a key link between the Casino CBD, Queen Elizabeth Park, sporting facilities and riverside open spaces, supporting the council’s long-term plans to improve connectivity and activate the town centre.
Federal Minister for Emergency Management, Kristy McBain, said the project would strengthen the community’s resilience to future disasters.
“This new suspension bridge is more resilient to future flooding events and re-establishes a vital community connection to the Casino CBD,” McBain said.
“The Federal Government is working alongside the New South Wales Government and Richmond Valley Council to help the region build back better following the devastating 2022 floods.”
Richmond Valley Council Mayor, Robert Mustow, said the bridge would become an important community asset.
“This bridge is much more than a river crossing,” Mayor Mustow said.
“It was identified in the Casino Place Plan as a key connection between our CBD, South Casino, sporting precincts and riverside spaces. It will play an important role in delivering the vision of the Casino CBD Masterplan by helping create a more connected and vibrant town centre.”
The bridge was delivered by outdoor infrastructure specialist FORGE.
