Works on the new Charles Darwin University city campus are underway with the transfer of the Cavenagh Street carpark from Darwin City Council to Charles Darwin University.
Decision making for this City Deal project is now under the control of Charles Darwin University and the Territory Government.
The new campus will bring hundreds of new staff and thousands of students into the Darwin CBD and support a substantial amount of Territory jobs during construction, providing a boost for the CBD and for jobs.
Analysis by Deloitte Access Economics has found that the inner-city campus could increase economic output in the Darwin region by more than $250 million during the next 15 years and sustain an extra 100 jobs in the Darwin economy by 2023.
Part of the $200 million Darwin City Deal includes the CDU CBD university campus which will be an iconic world-class precinct for locals and students to enjoy and will be located on the corner of Cavenagh Street and Garamilla Boulevard.
The Education Precinct is a $225 million project which is expected to be complete and operational in 2024.
The tender for construction works is expected to be issued to shortlisted tenderers shortly, and will be required to comply with NT Government Buy Local provisions.
Northern Territory Chief Minister, Michael Gunner, said, “The Territory Labor Government is revitalising the Darwin CBD to bring students into the city centre. This will support business and create jobs for Territorians.
“This is just another part of our work to make sure the Territory bounces back strong after the Coronavirus crisis.
“Getting major projects started as fast as possible allows for jobs to be created now, and for local businesses to be supported now.
“This is about getting our tradies out on the tools working on worthwhile, quality infrastructure.”
