MidCoast Council has given the green light to an upgrade program that aims to get the best value from $7.5 million allocated to improve local roads.
Council has prioritised work on its local road network over the coming financial year, following significant community interest in road upgrades.
MidCoast Council Mayor, Claire Pontin, said, “We want to make the best use of the funds we’re investing. That’s why we’re focussing on roads which typically require repeat maintenance.
“We want to bring these roads up to a condition where the need for repeat maintenance will be minimised.”
Mayor Pontin said that while the sections of road selected may not be the most damaged ones, they represent a strategic investment.
“It’s important to keep in mind that roads which are significantly deformed have already been prioritised in the annual road works plan,” Mayor Pontin said.
The program will primarily target sections of rural roads and improve access to rural areas.
The repairs will involve stabilising the road surface and resealing.
Sections of the following roads will receive attention under the $7.5 million program:
- Oxley Street, Taree
- Wherrol Flat Road
- Lansdowne Road
- Central Lansdowne Road
- Upper Lansdowne Road
- Hannam Vale Road
- Wallanbah Road, Gloucester
- Wynter/Manning Streets Taree roundabout
- High/Pulteney Streets Taree roundabout
- Warwiba Road Old Bar
- South Heron Road Old Bar
- Kolinda Drive Old Bar

- Several roads in North Arm Cove
- Red Head Road
- First Ridge Road, Smiths Lake
- Mermaid Avenue, Hawks Nest
- Booral Road, Bulahdelah

“We considered it important to make an investment in our local road network, which does not attract funding through State or Federal Government grants,” Mayor Pontin said.
