The Australian Local Government Association (ALGA) is urging all councils to embrace a new campaign to inspire Australians to reduce food waste.
The Great Unwaste campaign is a collaborative movement to change household behaviour nationwide.
The latest figures show Australian households throw away the equivalent of 7.7 million meals every day – with the average home generating 265kg of food waste a year.
Launched in September 2024, the Great Unwaste is now rallying local councils across the country to support the campaign with free tools and resources.
There is a dedicated Partner Hub to support local governments to champion household food waste reduction. Councils can also access How-To Guides and Campaign Kits with creative assets, tools and resources.
So far, a range of local governments, including Ballina Shire Council (NSW) and the City of Canning (WA), have adopted the campaign to strengthen community engagement and communication efforts — helping residents make small, everyday changes that make a big difference.
