Councils across Australia have been invited to participate in the Local Government Skills Audit and Jobs Survey, undertaken by the Australian Local Government Association (ALGA) in partnership with Public Skills Australia (PSA).
Every voice is important in building the evidence base, so ALGA encourages all councils to complete the 2025 LG Skills and Workforce Survey. This is the third time the survey has been run, and it creates a strong long-term analysis of the sector’s workforce needs.
The audit’s primary aim is to identify occupations and skills within local governments, highlight any gaps, and build a picture of workforce pressures across the sector.
This information will help councils to strengthen workforce planning and support the pipeline of workers needed to meet future demands.
PSA is one of ten jobs and skills councils and has been tasked with future-proofing Australia’s workforce. PSA works with many industry sectors, including all tiers of government to identify workforce challenges and potential skills shortages.
A series of workshops will be held with councils to map skill requirements by linking current and future services with roles, and identifying the skills required. The barriers to accessing and using vocational education and training, as well as opportunities to improve training pathways, will also be explored.
Alongside the workshops, councils can also contribute by completing the 2025 LG Skills and Workforce Survey to provide additional evidence to inform national advocacy and training improvements.
The nationwide workshops, starting this month, include:
- 24 September – Adelaide
- 7 October – Busselton
- 8 October – Perth
- 13 October – Rockhampton
- 14 October – Townsville
- 10 November – Melbourne
Two consultations have already occurred – in Brisbane on September 4, in Hobart on September 8, and in Cairns on September 16.
More workshop dates will be released in the coming weeks.
