The City of Gosnells is hoping to boost community recycling through the installation of 12 container exchange points across the City.
Community members can leave bottles and other containers that attract the 10c Containers for Change refund in the special baskets and cradles, allowing other community members to collect the containers and take them to be refunded.
City of Gosnells Mayor, Terresa Lynes, said she hoped the project would help change the way people thought about their waste.
“We know people often throw their recyclable bottles and cans in general waste bins while out and about, and this initiative will encourage more people to recycle their waste and allow others to claim the reward for collecting and returning the recyclable products,” Mayor Lynes said.
“The best part about this is that residents are encouraged to take responsibility for recycling themselves and to think about how valuable the bottles and cans used in packaging can be.
“We all need to work together to take responsibility for how we dispose of waste and make sure we recycle correctly.”
Container exchange points have been installed at Mills Park, Centennial Pioneer Park, Robinson Park, Langford Oval, Gosnells Town Centre and Knowledge Centre.
This is one of a series of initiatives to reduce waste underway in the City of Gosnells.
New recycling hubs have been installed at the City’s four libraries and Civic Centre, providing a place to drop off aerosol cans, printer cartridges, mobile phones, chargers and light globes.
The City is also working to reduce contamination in its yellow-lid kerbside recycling bins, with a seven-month WasteSorted education campaign.
