The Queensland Government has announced a $2 million funding program to support economic development across Cape York, targeting job creation and long-term growth in Indigenous communities.
The initiative will support 11 Indigenous councils to deliver locally driven projects aimed at strengthening regional economies and creating new opportunities.
Queensland Minister for Local Government and Water, Ann Leahy, said the fund delivers on a key election commitment to support Cape York communities through targeted investment.
“We’re committed to unlocking economic potential no matter where you live in Queensland, ensuring even our most remote communities have the support to build sustainable local economies, more jobs and a better lifestyle,” Leahy said.
“This is about empowering councils to deliver projects that reflect their local needs, priorities and aspirations to foster long-term benefits.”
Queensland Minister for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Partnerships, Fiona Simpson, said the funding would enable councils to drive projects that create meaningful economic opportunities.
“This funding can be used to build workforce capacity through skills development, upgrade infrastructure to support local businesses, or facilitate community initiatives to enhance liveability,” Simpson said.
The program is designed to support a range of initiatives, including business development, infrastructure upgrades and community programs that contribute to economic sustainability.
Member for Cook, David Kempton, said the investment would support projects aligned with local priorities.
“This is about giving our councils the certainty and support they need to deliver important projects and keep momentum moving forward,” Kempton said.
