The Federal Government is investing $5 million in the Footscray CBD to revitalise Melbourne’s inner west and establish it as a cultural precinct.
This is part of an $8.8 million investment in projects across Victoria under the government’s urban Precincts and Partnership Program to transform urban spaces to meet the needs of growing communities.
The funding will help revitalise the Metropolitan Activity Centre in Footscray, delivering a comprehensive business case, master plan and detailed design to transform it into Creative West, a vibrant cultural precinct.
This project will facilitate the planning and design of a six-star rated, 500-seat performance venue, a contemporary library and learning hub, and vibrant open spaces.
The Federal Government has said that it is dedicated to delivering investment in Australia’s cities and suburbs by working with state and local governments to deliver the local projects that matter most to residents.
The project will be led by Maribyrnong City Council and is being developed in partnership with the Wurundjeri Woi Wurrung Cultural Heritage Aboriginal Corporation, Victoria University, local traders and residents, and the arts and cultural community.
Federal Minister for Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government, Catherine King, said that this investment is building better urban places for people in Footscray with new arts and community facilities to create a range of opportunities for locals and visitors.

“Its development will leave a lasting legacy for Footscray and contribute to it being a more inclusive and vibrant community.”
Member for Fraser, Daniel Mulino, said that the government’s investment in Creative West will support a much-needed performing arts and cultural centre to be located in central Footscray.
“This community infrastructure will benefit all communities in the West of Melbourne – the fastest growing region in Australia with already over one million people,” Mr Mulino said.
“It will also create a facility that can be used by Footscray and the broader west’s thriving and diverse arts community.”
