A draft Master Plan has been released that will guide the transformation of the Warrawong Parklands into an iconic outdoor destination, and locals have been encouraged to provide feedback.
Set against the stunning backdrop of Lake Illawarra’s foreshore, the reimagined 32 hectare Warrawong Parklands is envisioned as a major attraction – delivering new recreational, cultural, commercial, and tourism opportunities for locals and visitors.
Key features of the draft plan include:
- Nearly 10 kilometres of new pedestrian and cycle paths, making the parklands more accessible and connected
- Improved lake access, including a new water sports hub and lake steps to encourage safe interaction with the water
- A proposed Olympic-standard skatepark, upgraded sports fields, new inclusive playgrounds, and dedicated nature play areas
- A striking 320-metre wetland boardwalk, offering scenic views and connecting key park features
- New spaces for cultural events, outdoor performances, and lakeside dining
- A strong focus on environmental restoration, including the planting of native plants and new trees, plus enhanced wetlands, birdwatching areas, and walking trails
The draft Master Plan marks the second phase of public consultation on the future of the Parklands, following strong community interest and input during the initial planning stages. The final Master Plan is expected to be released later this year.
Guided by a deep understanding of the area’s environmental, cultural, and community values, the plan aims to deliver a park that not only enhances liveability for locals but also positions Warrawong Parklands as a premier destination within the Illawarra region.
The development of the draft Master Plan has been overseen by a Working Group led by the Minister for Planning and Public Spaces which included community representatives, Wollongong City Council and Destination Wollongong.
The draft Master Plan is now on public exhibition until 15 October 2025, with the NSW Government inviting the community to share their feedback and help shape the park’s future.

NSW Minister for Planning and Public Spaces and Member for Wollongong, Paul Scully, said that the State Government has kept its commitment to keep this significant parcel of public space on the foreshore of Lake Illawarra in public hands and is now asking for feedback from the community on the vision for this re-imagined space.
“For too long this 32-hectare parkland has not had the interest or investment that it or the surrounding community deserved, and this is an opportunity to shape the future of this recreational space,” Scully said.
“This Master Plan has everything, from an Olympic-standard skatepark, to new pedestrian and cycle paths and 320-metre wetland boardwalk.
“Lake Illawarra is a beautiful backdrop, and we want the community to have their say on this Master Plan.”
