A new traineeship program aims to build a pipeline of skilled workers for Northern Territory councils.
Up to 25 locals are set to gain formal qualifications through on-the-job training placements across the Territory as part of the Local Government Traineeship Pilot Program.
The program is a joint initiative between the Local Government Association of the Northern Territory (LGANT), GTNT Group, Industry Skills Advisory Council NT and the Northern Territory Government.
The two-year pilot offers training in business administration, with scope to expand into other council-relevant fields.
“The new program was a great opportunity for people to step into meaningful, long-term employment in their local community,” said LGANT President Kon Vatskalis.
“We know local government is often the largest employer in remote and regional areas – and this program is a practical and powerful way to build our workforce, grow local capability and create future council leaders from within our communities.”
Participants will complete nationally recognised qualifications, such as a Certificate III in Business, while gaining hands-on experience in council environments.
The program also includes mentoring, peer networking and support from training providers.
Councils are being encouraged to take on at least one trainee, with GTNT Group managing recruitment, training logistics and mentoring.
LGANT says the program responds to long-standing challenges in attracting and retaining local talent in remote and regional council areas.
