Maitland City Council is preparing to give residents the opportunity to discover the many services and teams that work to keep the city thriving through its Local Government Week Open Day.

On Saturday 9 August, Council will host a free Open Day from 10am to 1pm at the Maitland Administration Centre and Town Hall, giving locals a unique opportunity to explore how local government operates and meet the people behind the services.

Visitors can take guided tours of the Administration Centre and Town Hall, explore interactive displays showcasing council’s plant equipment and the new Food Organics and Garden Organics (FOGO) truck and enjoy a free community BBQ. The Environment and Sustainability team will be giving away free native seedlings, and there’ll be opportunities to chat with councillors and staff from teams including libraries, human resources and community engagement.

Maitland Mayor, Philip Penfold, said that Local Government Week (Monday 4 to Sunday 10 August) is a chance to spotlight the broad and often unseen role councils play in their communities.

“Local Government Week is about showing that Council is much more than roads, rates and rubbish,” Mayor Penfold said.

“From maintaining playgrounds and pools to managing waste services, running libraries, hosting events and delivering community infrastructure, Council plays a vital role in bringing our shared vision of a connected city with thriving communities to life.

“Our Local Government Week Open Day is a great way for residents to go behind-the-scenes, meet the people who deliver services and learn how they can help shape Maitland’s future.”

Residents are invited to take part in free guided tours of the Maitland Administration Centre and Town Hall to discover where key decisions are made and how local services are delivered.

“We encourage everyone to come along, enjoy the free BBQ, meet your councillors and staff and discover how Council is working together to build a more liveable, sustainable and vibrant Maitland,” Mayor Penfold said.
