Rockhampton residents are being urged to prepare for disaster season as Get Ready Queensland week kicks off across the state.
Get Ready Queensland Week is a statewide initiative reminding all Queenslanders to plan, prepare, and protect what matters most in times of disaster. While we can’t stop severe weather, we can be ready for it.
Rockhampton Regional Council said that it is proud to support this vital campaign, with its Disaster Management Unit taking proactive steps to strengthen emergency preparedness across the region.
As part of Get Ready Week, Council’s Disaster Management Unit will be visiting communities across the region to speak with residents and present local groups with Disaster Ready Kits – a practical initiative funded by Get Ready Queensland.
Each kit is thoughtfully packed with essential items to support rural communities during emergencies, particularly in times of isolation or power outages.
The kits include:
- First aid kit
- Colouring books
- LED torches/lights
- Battarix SOS charge cards
- Emergency radio
- Ready-to-eat meals
- Multifunctional Arctic fan
- Flip-page emergency guide
- Colouring pencils
- Yeti cooling towels
The kits will be presented in Stanwell and Kalapa this Friday, followed by Alton Downs and Bouldercombe next week.
To further engage the community, Council will host a pop-up event at Bunnings Warehouse Rockhampton on Sunday, where residents can receive personalised advice, pick up resources, and learn simple but effective ways to prepare for extreme weather.
Get Ready Queensland Week encourages everyone to take three simple steps to improve their disaster preparedness:
- Understand Your Risk – Know the hazards that could affect your home, whether it’s flooding, bushfires, or cyclones
- Make a Plan – A household emergency plan ensures everyone knows what to do when disaster strikes
- Pack a Kit – A few extra items in your weekly shop can make a big difference in an emergency
Residents are also encouraged to visit the Rockhampton Regional Council Emergency Dashboard to sign up for alerts and stay informed.
Rockhampton Regional Council Mayor, Tony Williams, said that severe weather is a part of life in Queensland, but being prepared can make all the difference.
“Get Ready Queensland Week is a timely reminder for every household to take simple steps now that could save lives later,” Mayor Williams said.
“These kits are about empowering our rural communities with practical tools and information.
“Preparedness is a shared responsibility, and we’re proud to be working together to build resilience across the region.”
SES Local Controller, Jasper Humphries, said that maintaining your property as best you can during the calm makes a big difference.
“Clearing gutters, removing loose items from your yard, and trimming overhanging branches can significantly reduce risk,” Humphries said.
“We’re encouraging everyone to come along to these pop-up events, ask questions, and get involved.
“Preparedness is a shared responsibility, and together we can build a stronger, more resilient region.”
RRC Coordinator Disaster Management, Claudine Cassar, said that this pop-up event will be a great opportunity to get personalised advice, pick up some resources, and learn simple but effective ways to prepare for severe weather.
“Understanding your risks, making a plan, and packing an emergency kit are simple steps that can help keep you and your family safe during a disaster.”
