Shoalhaven Council has secured funding to plant shade trees and cool key town centre carparks.
More than 100 trees will be planted in several carparks across the Shoalhaven to reduce urban heat and increase biodiversity.
Council secured $488,000 in funding from the New South Wales Department of Planning under the Greening Our City Grant to provide shade for nine high-traffic asphalt areas in Nowra, West Vincentia, Milton and Ulladulla.
Shoalhaven was one of 24 councils across the state to receive a share of the $10 million program, with Mayor Patricia White saying the funding will improve the amenity and liveability of local centres.
“I’d like to thank the New South Wales Government for this vital funding contribution, which will allow Council to undertake the significant work required to increase canopy cover in high heat vulnerability areas,” White said.
“I’m confident this much-needed project will dramatically improve not only the look of our city but the overall comfort and amenity our community deserves while visiting our CBD areas.
“Congratulations to our staff for securing this funding to enable further beautification of our city while mitigating the impacts of climate change and fostering biodiversity,” she said.
Council has selected 102 mature, broad-canopy trees to be strategically planted in Council carparks and sporting complexes over the next 12 months.
The project will include the installation of soil vaults and cells beneath asphalt surfaces to support strong, healthy root systems.
Works will be undertaken by Council’s technical services team with support from qualified tree officers.
