Maitland City Council has received close to $1 million to deliver critical road safety upgrades at two major intersections across the city.
The funding has been provided through the Federal Government’s Black Spot Program, which supports safety improvements at high-risk locations.
More than $610,000 has been allocated for the construction of a new roundabout at the intersection of Dragonfly Drive and Grasshawk Drive in Chisholm.
A further $383,000 will support the installation of a raised safety platform at the intersection of McKeachie Drive and Oakhampton Road in Aberglasslyn, aimed at improving traffic management and reducing crash risks.
Maitland Mayor, Philip Penfold, said the projects would help improve safety for all road users.
“I welcome this funding announcement from the Australian Government to help us upgrade two important intersections in our road network,” Mayor Penfold said.
“These projects will support our commitment to keeping locals and visitors safe on our roads and strengthening connectivity across the city.”
He said the upgrades aligned with council’s broader vision of creating connected and resilient communities.
Both intersections have recorded multiple accidents over the past five years, with the works expected to reduce risks for motorists, pedestrians, and nearby residents.
Construction on both projects is expected to commence during the 2026 Christmas holiday period to minimise disruption to traffic and local businesses.
The upgrades form part of council’s ongoing investment in road safety and transport infrastructure across the Maitland region.
