Whittlesea Council has been recognised for its successful Smart Cities program with a major technology award.
Whittlesea Council was presented the Smart City Achievement of the Year award at this year’s MAV Technology Awards for Excellence.
The Council’s Smart Cities program uses data to improve how public spaces are managed and is funded through the Australian Government’s Smart Cities and Suburbs Program.
The project was delivered in partnership with La Trobe University, RMIT University, and the Banyule, Mitchell, Moreland and Nillumbik councils.
The project involves the use of a network of sensors installed throughout the council areas to collect anonymous data showing how people are using spaces, air quality, water levels and waste volumes.
The data then enables councils to be more efficient and effective in the way it manages public buildings and outdoor spaces on behalf of the community.
MAV President, Coral Ross, said, “Technology improves service delivery by speeding up communications and increasing convenience, enabling councils to function more efficiently and effectively.”
