Northern Beaches Council has received $5.6 million in funding from the New South Wales Government to help the construction of new cycling and pedestrian bridges and paths.
The Council has received $3.9 million for a pedestrian and cyclist bridge along Pittwater Road over Manly Creek and $1.7 million for the construction of a footpath through a section of the Mona Vale Strategic Centre.
The funding was provided through Transport NSW’s Get NSW Active program which will provide $39.5 million to 50 councils to deliver projects that will encourage walking and bike riding.
Northern Beaches Mayor, Sue Heins, said the Council welcomed the funding and thanked the New South Wales Government for its financial assistance.
“This will enable important walking and cycling paths to be constructed, particularly along busy Pittwater Road,” Mayor Heins said.
“Council is committed to encouraging people to walk or cycle as part of their everyday travel.
“Active transport such as cycling is great for the environment, community health and takes the pressure off our very busy roads in the Northern Beaches.”
New South Wales Transport Minister, Jo Haylen, said the projects would be transformative for the Northern Beaches.
“These projects will make it easier for people to walk and cycle over the Manly Creek and through Mona Vale, giving everyone the option to leave the car at home and enjoy the fresh air as they wander through this beautiful part of the world.
“I’m pleased the NSW Government has been able to contribute $5.6m to get these important projects going.”
Work is scheduled to begin in the 2023/2024 financial year.
