Construction is underway on a $10.5 million creative hub in Lake Macquarie, which will offer a space where local creatives and students alike can gather to learn and connect.

The project is funded entirely through Lake Macquarie City Council’s development contributions and proceeds from the sale of Council land at Bennetts Green.

The hub, located in Windale, will sit near the Lake and South Street intersection and boast a library filled with lounge and study areas, a kid-friendly reading area and spaces for workshops and events.

Lake Macquarie Mayor, Councillor Kay Fraser, said the new hub will help build a strong community that is inclusive, meaningful and supportive of everyone.

“This state-of-the-art building will breathe new life into Windale and offer a space for everyone including creatives, academics and students to use in their own backyard,” Mayor Fraser said.

“Windale and surrounding suburbs are growing quickly, and facilities like this ensure we’re able to keep up with community needs.”

Manager Community Partnerships, Andrew Bryant, said a large activity space which opens out to a deck would sit adjacent to the library.

“We want to foster a love for learning right in the heart of Windale,” Mr Bryant said.

Other features include soundproof meeting rooms, office spaces, a commercial kitchen, outdoor sitting spaces and a new car park.

Contractors North Construction and Building will undertake the construction project, which is expected to be completed early 2023.

Until then, The Rover mobile library service will visit Windale weekly, at the intersection of Lake and South Street.
