Community-sourced proposals inform council plan

Nine community-sourced proposals will form the City of Hobsons Bay’s draft Better Places guide for its Altona North and Brooklyn suburbs.

Better Places is a placed-based approach that focuses on overall ‘places’ rather than individual ‘pieces’ and provides a new model for how Council designs and delivers projects.

Better Places also aims to more actively involve the community in shaping the place they live by helping to create a vision, set of principles and projects that reflects their values, ideas and priorities.

Respondents fielded several suggestions to the council’s survey; including safer and more accessible spaces for young people, a new ‘heart’ for Altona North and ‘Oxygen Forests’.

Cherry Lake Ward Councillor Tony Briffa said that Council was seeking community feedback on the nine ideas proposed in the third stage of consultation of the draft Place Guide which will help shape a better future for these two suburbs.

“After multiple stages and months of community consultation and research, we are proud to present the community with nine ideas which bring to life the community vision developed by the residents of Brooklyn and Altona North,” Cr Briffa said.

“I strongly encourage anyone living or working in these suburbs to visit the Better Places website to learn more, to let us know what you think and to get involved.”

Cherry Lake Ward Councillor Daria Kellander said that the ideas proposed responded to three key themes identified by residents as the top priorities for Brooklyn and Altona North.

“Air quality, noise and traffic and safety, are key issues for the residents of Brooklyn whilst Altona North residents are concerned about maintaining the character of the neighbourhood with the rapid growth of large-scale residential developments,” Cr Kellander said.

“The projects listed in the draft Place Projects aims to improve the liveability and amenity, make Brooklyn and Altona North more walkable and bike-friendly, and provide opportunities to celebrate and strengthen the cultural diversity of the area and bring the different parts of the community closer together.”

The draft Better Places Brooklyn and Altona North Place Guide is open for feedback until 27 July 2022. Visit www.better-places.com.au for further information and to get involved.
