The Australian Local Government Association (ALGA) is coordinating a national response to the Fair Work Commission’s new Road Transport Contractual Chain Order (RTCCO), following concerns from councils about the financial and administrative impacts of the changes.
Issued by the Fair Work Commission in April, the order sets rules for fuel cost recovery across road transport contractual chains.
ALGA said feedback from local government indicated the order was creating financial pressure, increased administrative requirements and uncertainty around implementation for councils managing transport and contractor arrangements.
As part of its response, ALGA is sharing legal advice prepared by Mallesons Lawyers through the Local Government NSW to help councils better understand the practical implications of the order.
The peak body said the work formed part of a broader coordinated effort between state and territory local government associations, including the preparation of sector-wide evidence and engagement in the Fair Work Commission’s one-month review process.
ALGA previously lodged a submission on the draft order and is now preparing a supplementary submission based on feedback from councils and associations nationwide.
The organisation is expected to participate in a Fair Work Commission hearing scheduled for 25 May 2026.
