A major safety upgrade is coming to Shepparton North, with Greater Shepparton City Council set to deliver a $1.9 million works package aimed at protecting school students and pedestrians.
Backed by the Victorian Government’s Safe Local Roads and Streets Program, the works will target crash-prone intersections and busy pedestrian areas on council-managed streets.
The upgrades will focus on Rea Street, Maude Street, Clive Street, Orr Street, Harold Street, Dunrobin Street, Bourchier Street, Barker Avenue, and Marungi Street – areas that serve four local schools and see high foot traffic from students and families.
Key measures include two compact roundabouts to be installed on Rea Street at the intersections with Maude and Clive Streets, which are intended to reduce crash risk for thousands of daily road users.
Speed humps will be introduced across five key streets to curb unsafe speeds, while three raised pedestrian crossings will be installed on Orr, Harold and Rea Streets to create safer routes for children walking to and from school.
A fourth raised crossing will be added on Marungi Street, and further traffic calming will be introduced at Bourchier Street and Barker Avenue. At both school crossings, bus-friendly asphalt speed cushions will be placed to slow vehicles approaching the area.
Council will manage delivery of the works and has committed to keeping residents informed about construction timelines and potential traffic disruptions.
“Greater Shepparton City Council has been working alongside the Victorian Government, Minister Melissa Horne, and the Transport Accident Commission on this strong partnership to deliver safer roads for our community,” said Mayor Shane Sali.
“This funding will support vital upgrades on some of Shepparton’s busiest local streets which are home to several large schools – it is a significant investment in the safety and wellbeing of our residents.”
The $210 million statewide program, jointly run by the Transport Accident Commission and the Victorian Government, is working with all 79 councils to upgrade the highest-risk local roads across Victoria by June 2027.
“We’re proud to be working with Greater Shepparton City Council to deliver these vital safety improvements and keep locals safe,” said Minister for Roads and Road Safety Melissa Horne.
“Right across the state, we’re delivering the upgrades needed to make Victoria’s roads safer, regardless of who they’re managed by.”
