The City of Canning is aiming to educate the community and support positive recycling habits to ensure kerbside bins are being used correctly through the seventh round of bin tagging, which will commence on 20 February 2023.
The eight-week program will take place in parts of East Cannington, Bentley, Cannington, Riverton, Canning Vale, Queens Park, Shelley, Lynwood and two zones in Willetton.
Partnering with the Western Australian Local Government Association (WALGA), the program provides direct feedback to residents on how to use the general waste and recycling bins correctly, to support sustainability, the environment and increase resource recovery.
Each fortnight waste education officers will look inside kerbside bins, in the selected areas, and will provide feedback in the form of a tag, to help residents ensure they are using the bins correctly.
Tags will display a happy or sad face and detail more information about the use of the bins and what can be improved.
City of Canning Mayor, Patrick Hall, said educating residents on how to recycle correctly is an important step in the City’s plan for a climate resilient future.
“Taking the time to educate people on how to correctly use their kerbside bins empowers people to recycle in the correct way, which all helps in the City’s plan for a low carbon future,” Mayor Hall said.
“It also allows the City to send less waste to landfill and recycle more, reducing the processing costs associated with contaminated bins.”
During the previous round of bin tagging, the most common mistakes found in the City’s recycling bins were soft plastics including chip bags, plastic produce bags and lolly wrappers.
Residents can make further improvements by ensuring that only rinsed containers without lids are placed in the recycling bin, recyclables are not bagged and that all meat trays are placed in the general waste bin.
Electronic waste and hazardous household waste such as aerosols, paint, weed killers and engine oil cannot be disposed of in kerbside bins and must be disposed of at a drop-off point such as the City’s Waste Transfer Station in Canning Vale.
