Drought-affected councils across South Australia are being encouraged to contribute to a sector-wide consultation aimed at strengthening advocacy for additional financial support.
The initiative forms part of the next phase of advocacy led by the SA Drought Advisory Group, of which the Local Government Association of South Australia (LGASA) is a member.
To support this work, the LGASA is asking councils to provide detailed information on the financial pressures they have experienced as a result of prolonged dry conditions.
The consultation is focused on understanding the direct and indirect costs associated with drought response, including reduced rate revenue, increased demand for hardship assistance, and the long-term impact on council budgets and service delivery.
Councils are being asked to provide evidence of the financial effects linked to rate deferral arrangements and hardship policies introduced to support residents and businesses during drought periods.
The information collected will be used to inform discussions with state and federal stakeholders, helping to strengthen the sector’s case for targeted funding, policy reform and practical support measures.
LGASA has said the survey is an important opportunity for councils to ensure their experiences were reflected in broader advocacy efforts.
By contributing accurate and detailed data, councils can help demonstrate the scale of financial challenges facing local government in drought-affected regions and support calls for coordinated, long-term solutions.
All drought-impacted councils are encouraged to complete the online survey. Consultation closes on 16 March 2026.
