After multiple rounds of water testing, a winner has been selected for the 2022 Ixom Best Tasting Tap Water in New South Wales and the Australian Capital Territory.

Out of several cities and regions, Shoalhaven City Council has won the competition.

The competition was held at the Water Industry Operators Association of Australia (WIOA) New South Wales state conference in Tamworth.

The two other tap waters in the final after the heats were Tamworth Regional Council and Port Macquarie Hastings Council.

Water authorities from various regional and metropolitan areas participated in state heats across 2022 where water samples were judged on qualities like colour, clarity, odour and mouthfeel during blind taste tests.

Water samples are judged according to the Water Tasting Wheel which outlines some of the attributes that water professionals use when judging water.

Shoalhaven will go on to represent New South Wales in the Water of Origin competition against Queensland and in the national championship later in the year.

WIOA Managing Director, George Wall, said the competition recognises and acknowledges the individuals and organisations that are stepping up, some in very trying circumstances, to make sure their communities are supplied with safe drinking water every day.

“We want to use the competition to let people know the great work that is going on in local communities around Australia and help shape and secure Australia’s water future,” Mr Wall said.

“WIOA would also like to acknowledge Ixom’s support of the Best Tasting Tap Water competition. We have been able to run the competition through these uncertain times because of their unwavering commitment and support to the industry.”

Ixom Managing Director and CEO, David Head, said Ixom is proud to be the sponsor of the prestigious 2022 WIOA Best Tasting Tap Water competition.

“Ixom has been involved in water treatment for almost a century. We supply water treatment chemicals to water treatment plants all over Australia to help ensure that Australia continues to have world renowned, high quality water,” Mr Head said.

Shoalhaven will also go on to represent Australia at the annual Berkeley Springs International Water Tasting Competition held in West Virginia, USA.

Other state competitions will be held later in the year.
