70 new Pay by Park smart parking meters have been installed across the City of Bedigo’s City Centre and came online from 19 October for residents.

The new state-of-the-art meters are paperless and work by simply typing in a vehicle’s number plate to record parking time and payment, which can be made by either coin or card.

City of Greater Bendigo Acting Manager Safe and Healthy Environments, Jock Schofield, said the smart parking meters are part of the city’s ongoing commitment to provide additional options for motorists.

“The meters are the latest technology and will replace all older, outdated payment machines over time to provide more convenient payment options for motorists, as well as environmental and cost savings on ticket paper and maintenance,” Mr Schofield said.

“The new meters are easy to use by simply entering a car’s number plate into the meter using the keypad and pressing ok. Motorists then select how they want to pay, using either card or coins, and then how much time they want to pay for, according to the time limits for the area where they are parking. This is followed by inserting coins or tapping or inserting a card to pay.

“The smart meters provide greater flexibility to pay for parking and are easy to use. They are also paperless which means there is no need to return to the vehicle after paying for your ticket.

“While the new machines won’t issue a ticket, motorists can request an eReceipt. They can also check how much time they have left by typing their registration number into any smart meter within the City Centre.

“The City will remove the old ticket machines in November 2020 in areas where the new smart meters have been installed.

“The City has also extended the successful PayStay parking system. PayStay allows users to pay for their parking online or via a smartphone app and is available throughout the Bendigo City Centre except for the Edwards Street and Hargreaves Street Multi Storey car parks.”
