Western Australia’s top water-efficient councils have been recognised.
The City of Perth was named the 2025 Platinum Waterwise Council of the Year at a recent event hosted by the state’s Water Corporation.
The City of Perth earned the accolade for its use of stormwater recycling and smart irrigation technologies.
Key initiatives included an expanded stormwater harvesting project, which captured 60 million litres of runoff in 2023-24 reducing groundwater reliance by nearly 30 per cent.
The City also deployed irrigation systems that monitor soil moisture to prevent overwatering and prioritised native, waterwise plants in public spaces.
Four other councils received special recognition at the event.
The Cities of Armadale and Nedlands, along with the Shire of Capel, achieved gold endorsement for the first time under the Waterwise Council Program, which is jointly run by Water Corporation and the Department of Water and Environmental Regulation. The Shire of Ashburton was also named as the latest council to achieve Waterwise endorsement.
Mandurah Aquatic and Recreation Centre was awarded Platinum Waterwise Aquatic Centre of the Year, reflecting its leading water efficiency practices.
This recognition is part of the Waterwise Aquatic Centre Program, established with the Leisure Institute of WA, which has endorsed 58 centres statewide since 2008.
“It’s great to see local government leading from the front when it comes to supporting collective water security across Western Australia,” said Water Minister Don Punch.
The Waterwise Council and Aquatic Centre Programs support the WA Government’s Kep Katitjin-Gabi Kaadadjan (Waterwise Action Plan 3), aiming to build leading waterwise communities in Boorloo (Perth) and Bindjareb (Peel) by 2030.
