The City of Rockingham has received more than $5 million in Federal and State Government Blackspot funding for eleven road safety improvement projects throughout 2021/2022.
The cost of federally funded Blackspot projects are covered entirely by the Australian Government, while state Blackspot funding is administered by Main Roads WA and covers two-thirds of a project’s budget.
Six projects will receive federal Blackspot funding. Highlights include:
- Roundabout at the intersection of Safety Bay Road and Mandurah Road in Baldivis: Installing pre-deflections on the eastern and western approaches of Safety Bay Road to slow traffic ($422,000)
- Roundabout at the intersection of Read Street and Malibu Road: Installing pre-deflections on the northern and southern approaches of the roundabout to encourage drivers to slow down ($423,900)
- Baldivis Road, between Kerosene Lane and Fifty Road: Installation of median islands, widening of the road carriageway and upgrading street lighting ($975,000)
A further five projects will receive state Blackspot funding. Major projects include:
- Mundijong Road (Telephone Lane to Duckpond Road) Stage 2: Installation of street lighting, crash barriers, realigning the curve of the road and installing a crash barrier with a raised median ($2.9 million)
- Read Street, Chalgrove Avenue and Centaurus Street intersection Stage 2: Extending the right turn pockets on both the northern and southern approaches of the intersection along with the installation of overhead traffic lights on the north and south approaches ($559,000)
The other funded projects are listed in the City’s Business Plan.
Rockingham Mayor, Barry Sammels, said the City had secured the highest number of funded projects as well as the most funding out of all metropolitan local governments in Western Australia.
“Blackspot projects are those that have a recorded history of incidents with a specific focus on fatal/and or serious crashes. The Blackspot funding the City has secured from both the Federal and State Government will play a key role in boosting safety for motorists across the community,” Mayor Sammels said.
The delivery of these projects will further support the targets of the City’s award winning Road Safety Action Plan, which has the overarching goal of zero fatalities and serious injuries on local roads.
